For this adventure, we sail to a secluded beach and visit a magnificent cave on an island off the north-western coast of Trinidad.
On board our yacht, we cruise from Chaguaramas past the smaller islands off the north-western peninsula before arriving on Gaspar Grande island. Here, we disembark for a short hike (easy to moderate, slightly uphill) to the cave entrance. We make a stop at the visitors centre for a beautiful view (also bathroom stop). This island has a rich history — it was sacred to the indigenous people of Trinidad and was for many years a whaling station — and the caves are its crowning glory.
We venture down into a system of limestone caves and caverns approximately 85 feet underground (via a sturdy metal stairway, with railings for extra support). There we experience the marvels of the natural formations created over thousands of years, with stunning stalagmites and stalactites in shapes of animals, birds and even one that inspires the nickname “The Buddha”. We descend to a mysterious cave open to the sky above with a deep tidal pool called “The Blue Grotto”.
After leaving the cave, we drop anchor at a secluded bay for a plunge into the energizing Caribbean waters. Time to soak up the sea and sun, by swimming, enjoying activities with our water toys, or listening to the music of your choice or just the calming sounds of the ocean.
